Earlier Wednesday on the SEC Coaches’ Teleconference, Nick Saban announced that linebacker Dylan Moses would miss the season due to a knee injury that requires surgery.

Moses, of course, is the Crimson Tide’s leader on defense. He makes all the calls, and he’s one of the best overall players in the nation regardless of position.

Later Wednesday, Saban met with the media during his regularly scheduled availability, and he discussed the risk-reward scenario of practice, which makes players susceptible to injury.

“I’m going to say this about Dylan Moses, and then, I’m not going to say anything else about it,” Saban said. “We love Dylan. He had a great camp. He was a great leader. He was a good signal caller on defense.

“I guess that I’m always the guy who has to make a decision as to whether we practice or we don’t practice,” Saban continued. “If we practice, we got a chance to be good. If we don’t practice, I don’t see how we can get any execution. So, there’s risk-reward in everything that you do. I think it’s a character check for Dylan in terms of the support that we want to give him and the adversity he has to overcome.”

Including Moses, Alabama has now lost three contributors for the season due to injuries suffered during practice. Linebacker Josh McMillon went down earlier in fall camp, as did 5-star running back Trey Sanders.

Saban then called Moses’ injury not only a character check for Moses himself, but also his team.

“It’s also a character check for everybody on our team to be able to keep the faith, to respond to adversity the way they need to to accept the challenge and to rise above the challenge,” Saban said. “Support each other and support the young players who are going to have to play and just kind of go from there. That’s the only choice we have.”

Alabama and Duke kickoff Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET from Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
