Nick Saban spoke on ABC before the second half, and explained why Alabama moved to Ty Simpson at quarterback and benched Tyler Buchner.

“We wanted to see if we had a quarterback who could play winning football, and felt we were struggling a little bit, maybe it was the rain, I don’t know,” Saban told Kris Budden. “Ty was the guy that practiced the best this week as a backup player, so he’s got a chance to play.”

About the offense, Saban said South Florida is stunting and blitzing “all the time” and, “we’re not doing a very good job of picking it up, run or pass. We’re getting too many negative plays, so we don’t have any consistency in execution, so we’ve got to get that right.”

Simpson started the game 0-for-3 after he replaced Tyler Bucher, who went 5-for-14 passing for 34 yards. Buchner started the game in place of Jalen Milroe, who started the first 2 games, but threw 2 interceptions last week in a loss to Texas.
