Tyler Buchner was benched late in the first half of Alabama’s game vs. South Florida on Saturday.

Buchner is making his first career start for the Crimson Tide in this one. However, he struggled mightily in the first half before getting the hook.

Buchner completed just 5-of-14 passes for 34 yards before making way for Ty Simpson.

Buchner replaced Jalen Milroe in the lineup this week following Alabama’s loss to Texas in Week 2. Milroe has been great as a runner this year, but struggled as a passer in the loss to the Longhorns.

The change came with Alabama trailing South Florida 3-0 late in the first half. Simpson entered the game after Alabama took over on South Florida’s 25-yard line after a fumble. The Crimson Tide converted that turnover into a game-tying field goal.

Despite the scoring drive, Simpson also struggled throwing the ball. He went 0-for-3 in the first half. Alabama managed just 113 total yards in the first half against USF.

Buchner transferred to Alabama this past offseason. He reunited with former Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, who is now calling the plays for the Crimson Tide.
