Nick Saban is not the kind of coach to shake up the uniforms, and during his radio show this week, the Alabama coach explained why he wouldn’t wear the alternate white helmets.

Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne and Saban are on the same page against white helmets. Alabama wore white helmets in the past, notably in the 1983 and 1984 seasons. They also popped up a few times in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, per AL.com.

“That’s why we don’t change uniforms all the time. We wear the same uniform,” Saban said. “They want to wear white helmets. Everybody wants to do this and that. To me, there’s an expectation that when we run out of the tunnel, this is the brand. This is the culture. This is what people expect to see.”

The uniforms extend Saban’s well-known mantra about establishing, and holding up, a standard for the program.

“We have a responsibility and obligation to do it to a certain standard and level of excellence and with a lot of character,” Saban said. “That’s kind of how I try to preach it to them.”
