Mac Jones has had a pretty high-profile offseason as he’s transitioned to the NFL and the New England Patriots.

He’s developed a friendly relationship with Cam Newton, who gave him the “Mac and Cheese” nickname, as they battle for the starting quarterback job with the Patriots.

On Wednesday, Jones turned in a pretty solid practice, according to Zack Cox of NESN. He reported that Jones closed out the morning with 16 straight reps, going 10-for-14 in that span with one INT and one near-INT. He was 13-of-18 overall in 11-on-11s and 4-of-5 in 7-on-7s. Newton went 5-for-7 in 11s and 2-for-6 in 7s.

However, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels shared with reporters that Jones is “good at getting yelled at.”

The immediate connection to that comment was Jones’ time with Nick Saban at Alabama. Of course, Jones’ profile was elevated when he had some back-and-forth exchanges with Saban, including one where he scored on a lateral off of a screen pass. Then Saban barked at him.

“I GOT ABSOLUTELY destroyed by Coach Saban for the next 10 minutes,” Jones told ESPN. “Everyone still brings it up, and I’m super embarrassed.”

But perhaps to McDaniels’ point, former Alabama teammate Miller Forristall recalls how practices typically unfolded.

“There’s a lot of days where I remember Mac getting yelled at by Coach Saban,” Forristall concurs. “Or yelled at by the defense. He loved it.”
