On Thursday, five-time college football national champion and future Hall of Fame coach Nick Saban was honored by Forbes for his leadership skills, checking in at No. 11 (out of 50!) on its “World’s Greatest Leaders” list.

Saban, who did not know he was going to be on the list, was flattered. Here was his response, via AL.com:

“I guess that I get a lot more credit than I deserve obviously, but it’s quite an honor,” Saban said. “A lot of people contribute to that in our organization, and I certainly appreciate what they do.”

Aside from his outstanding 100-18 record with Alabama — 191-60-1 overall at the college level — Saban has been an active member in community over the years. He has his own charity organization called “Nick’s Kids Foundation,” and has spoken at Team Focus (a mentoring organization founded and operated by former college football coach and broadcaster Mike Gottfried) for each of the last nine years.

“I think that besides doing things for the university and Nick’s Kids, this is the only thing I’ve done nine years in a row,” Saban said. “So that tells us how much we believe in what Mike (Gottfried is) doing with young people. And it kind of goes along with Nick’s Kids that we do, and that my father tried to do. So we’re always happy to be here and to support this. Team Focus is something wonderful for fatherless children.

“I’m very pleased and happy to be able to do things for people and give back to the community, and hopefully help some young people have a better opportunity to be successful in life. That’s really all that our program is about and to be able to give back to the community, to see somebody have a better chance in life, is something that I really care about, Terry cares about and we work hard at it.”
