Nick Saban talks positive relationship with Hugh Freeze despite Alabama-Auburn rivalry: 'It's really not personal'
Nick Saban and Hugh Freeze will meet on the gridiron as opposing coaches for the 1st time since 2016 as Alabama and Auburn meet in the Iron Bowl.
Saban and Freeze obviously grew familiar with each other during Freeze’s initial stint in the SEC as Ole Miss head coach from 2012-2016. On the field, Freeze held a 3-2 record against Saban with wins in 2014 and 2015.
That said, just because they’re now helming rival teams doesn’t mean there’s bad blood between the 2 men.
“I’ve always been a guy who has a lot of respect for coaches and what we do to promote our game and how we try to impact young people as players,” Saban said on Monday. “I think you can have a relationship with somebody and still compete like crazy when you play against each other, but it’s really not personal. You’re doing the best you can to get your team to play the best, and I respect that as a coach.”
Alabama and Auburn kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will be televised on CBS.
