That’s a weird headline. It was a weird play.
Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard seemed to be working on their jump shots during a pivotal 4th and 1 QB sneak last Saturday against Tennessee:

Now look, the Tide ended up converting on that first down. And it’s hard to tell what Bernard and Williams would have been able to do to affect that play split out that wide. But that’s part of the problem, as is the strange jump shot practice in, once again, a very crucial moment in the game.
OC Nick Sheridan was asked about the play on Monday and he gave a brutally honest, unexpected answer:

It’s just hard to guess what the tactical advantage here would be. The optics would have looked worse if the Tide were unable to collect that first down, which they very nearly didn’t convert. Plenty of Vols fans will tell you it was a bad spot and that Milroe was stood up at the line, but the initial push made it very close.
Either way, there’s a lot of the Crimson Tide to answer right now. Alabama is 0-2 in the state of Tennessee this year and still has a tough matchup upcoming against LSU.
