The New England Patriots will begin training camp soon, but former Alabama LB Dont’a Hightower won’t be putting on the pads.

Hightower was one of two players the Patriots placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. The injury bug has been a problem for Hightower, who has only played one full 16-game season since being drafted by New England in 2012. Hightower missed three games last season due to injuries and did not take part in offseason workouts due to an undisclosed injury.

As for preseason, Hightower can be taken off the PUP list at any time during training camp and placed on the roster. If he remains on the PUP list at the start of the regular season, however, it means he would miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

In March, Hightower signed a four-year deal worth $43.5 million to stay with the Patriots.
