The team that was dubbed potentially “Nick Saban’s greatest team ever” now all of a sudden has a major question mark.

Tua Tagovailoa left Saturday’s game due to a leg injury, as he took a direct shot to his lower thigh just above his already injured knee. As Tagovailoa goes, Alabama’s offense goes.

Saturday, however, even with Tagovailoa in the game, the Tide’s offense looked mortal. The offensive line allowed four sacks and Tagovailoa wasn’t as sharp as he usually is. Part of that has to do with his injury, part of it being an off game and part of it due to Mississippi State’s disruptive front seven.

But Tagovailoa’s health is a major concern right now, and Paul Finebaum echoed those sentiments on SportsCenter Sunday morning.

“I’m sure he’ll (Nick Saban) be as irritable as he can possibly be, but they’re playing The Citadel,” Finebaum said. “There’s no way in the world I’m letting this guy play against The Citadel. … Here’s the biggest issue: Jalen Hurts isn’t available. Jalen Hurts was spotted walking in a boot yesterday. When can he come back? I don’t know. But I think Alabama has a real concern at the quarterback position right now.”

Nick Saban didn’t seem particularly happy about the low hits Tagovailoa took against Mississippi State.

“The NFL has a rule for that,” Saban said shrugging during his post-game press conference. “The NFL has a lot of rules to protect people. Some of which people complain about. I think we have a lot of capable people in the NCAA to make decisions about, ‘What are good rules relative to player safety.’ I’ve always been supportive of those rules and I think someone else should really make a decision about whether there’s anything wrong with what happened in this game today. I’m not complaining about it. Football is football, and it is what it is. We need to do a better job of protecting our QB so people don’t get a chance to hit him.”

Defenses are smelling blood in the water with Tagovailoa’s injury, and this won’t be the last time Tagovailoa gets hit low for the remainder of the season.
