Whether you wear a Houndstooth hat every Saturday or you vomit at the sight of Crimson, we can all agree that Alabama has won a trophy case full of national championships.

As for the exact number? Good luck reaching an agreement there.

We’ve only had a true national title game since 1998, the first season of the BCS system. So Alabama claims 16 national championships. Still others throw out as many as five of those as disputed titles from various polls.

On Wednesday, the Tide showed off an updated elevator door in the player’s lounge. Can anyone guess which numerals grace those doors?

This seems to frustrate ESPN college football analyst Danny Kanell, a well-known contrarian when it comes to the Tide and most things SEC.

The studio of the “(Ryen) Russillo and Kanell” radio show features several classic college football helmets — standard decor for an ESPN channel. Included in the mix, naturally, is the Tide’s long-standing Crimson helmet with the white stripe and numbering.

The previous helmet was No. 15. Kanell felt it necessary to switch it to No. 11 on Wednesday, the number of national championships that he insists the Tide has won.

Wherever you stand on the issue, Alabama has won four national championships in the last seven years under coach Nick Saban, one of the best eras in college football history. It’s hard to argue that.
