Hunter Renfrow was the hero for Clemson in last season’s College Football Playoff national title game.

Renfrow, a former walk-on receiver, caught the go-ahead touchdown pass for Clemson with one second remaining, knocking off Alabama 35-31 to give the Tigers their first national championship since 1981.

But during the game, something strange happened, according to The Athletic’s Matt Fortuna: Renfrow got mad.

Blame Tony Brown.

The Alabama cornerback trash talked Renfrow all night. Eventually, Renfrow lost it.

“How about you guard me then, Renfrow snapped,” Fortuna wrote.

“And then I immediately felt bad,” Renfrow said. “And it took me like three plays to get up the courage to say: OK, I’m sorry. I should not have said that.

“Because if we were going to win, I wanted to win the right way and not be a jerk about it, you know?”

Aside from his game-winning catch, Renfrow had a career-high 10 receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns, both in the second half. It was the best showing any pass-catcher had against the Crimson Tide’s vaunted defense last season.

Now 2-0 and ranked No. 2 in the country, Renfrow and Clemson travel to Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday to take on the No. 14 Cardinals.

Kickoff at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium is set for 8 p.m. ET.
