Urban Meyer appears to be getting close to becoming the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Could he then be bringing one of his former top assistants with him?

According to Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports, it’s a possibility that Meyer would hire Charlie Strong, who previously served as his defensive coordinator at Florida. ESPN’s Michael DiRocco reported that Strong has yet to make a decision, though, about whether he’d join Meyer’s staff.

Meyer was the head coach at Florida from 2005-10, while Strong was the Gators’ defensive coordinator from 2003-09. Strong also had previous stints as an assistant at Florida from 1983-84, 1988-89 and 1991-94.

This past season, Strong served as a defensive analyst at Alabama. That came after he had stints as the head coach at Louisville (2010-13), Texas (2014-16) and South Florida (2017-19).

It’s not a surprise that Strong could be leaving the Crimson Tide after one season. His job as a defensive analyst was an off-field role, one that seemed like it would eventually lead him back to a bigger job, even if it was with another team.

The Jaguars fired former head coach Doug Marrone at the end of the 2020 season, and since then, there had been plenty of rumors about Meyer potentially getting the job. Meyer last coached at Ohio State, where he was the head coach from 2012-18, and he’s never coached in the NFL, so it makes sense he’d want a familiar assistant like Strong to be joining him.
