Tide dynasty over? Scott Cochran's decision to leave Alabama for Georgia leads to several interesting reactions
Could this be the loss that finally ends Nick Saban’s Alabama dynasty?
If you missed the news, as first reported by Cecil Hurt of the Tuscaloosa News, longtime Alabama head strength coach Scott Cochran is leaving Alabama for Georgia. Cochran is expected to be named Kirby Smart’s new special teams coordinator after serving as the strength coach at Alabama dating back to 2007.
This news comes after several former Saban assistants have tried, and failed, to lure Cochran away from Tuscaloosa in previous offseasons. According to ESPN college football insider Chris Low, Saban is prepared to address Cochran’s departure with his team on Monday.
Following the news, college football Twitter was buzzing following just how big of a loss this could be for Saban and his Alabama football program, especially considering Cochran is leaving for an SEC rival that many see as the biggest threat to the Tide’s SEC dominance.
Nick Saban plans to tell the @AlabamaFTBL team later Monday afternoon about Scott Cochran leaving for the @GeorgiaFootball special teams job. Cochran’s exit means head trainer Jeff Allen is the lone football staff member remaining that came with Saban to Alabama in 2007.

“This is a seismic move,” says @JTalty on reports Scott Cochran is leaving Alabama staff to join Kirby Smart at Georgia.

This is a SIGNIFICANT loss for Bama and ridiculous coup by Kirby and UGA!
Is this the first sign of a “changing of the guard” in the SEC??? https://t.co/4AOszAeRqS— Kirk Herbstreit (@KirkHerbstreit) February 24, 2020
There's been a lot of staff turnover at #Alabama over the years but Scott Cochran (and Jeff Allen) have been as valuable as any assistant Saban's had there, according to some Bama coaches. https://t.co/czQBxsUNrH https://t.co/mlM99EPE8L

Holy mutha!! This is a massive move in the SEC. Cochran has been as big of an impact for @AlabamaFTBL in the Saban era as anyone not named Nick Saban. https://t.co/GexxXFCULX

LMAO…
You know the Bammers are actually worried when they treat this news like its no big deal. “Oh, injuries.” “Oh, whispers.”
The more they say how big a deal this isn’t, means how big a deal it is.
Like clockwork… I knew you would show up. Notice how nobody ever shares your opinion on things?
With every word you say, you tell us just how big a deal this actually is, BamaTard.
You’re trying to hard… He was a good S&C coach… He has never been an on field coach so how do you know if he is good or not?
Again.
I told you so.
Don’t worry you’re not going to last long on this account either Trudawg..
You’ve got it all figured out. Now see if you can figure out how to make a S&C coach a special teams coach.
He didn’t read past the title…
Corch always trolls on Bama articles. Bama lives 24/7 rent free in his minuscule brain.
Yeah, because people can only be one thing in life, and can’t ever be anything else.
Keep telling everyone this is no big deal, and we know just how big a deal it is.
Well considering he has never coached special teams you have no way to know if he will be good or not…
He is good as a S&C… I mean Sark is a good OC but I wouldn’t want him as a HC…
It’s like y’all haven’t ever read the Art of War (Saban has, and he knows just how much this hurts).
Except this isn’t war.. A coach can be replaced…
It’s not as big of a deal as you are making it out to be. Wait till 9/19 and Bama will beat your team AGAIN.
He did the same thing with Mel… He is delusional.
Yeah, I’m sure Scott Cochran will not be a tremendous recruiter, BamaTard.
And you know who else had zero on-field coaching experience when Kirby hired him? Glenn Schuman, who coaches LBers and is also a great recruiter. But I guess he’s trash, too?
Seriously… keep saying how big a deal this is not, means how big a deal it truly is.
Repeating nonsense over and over doesn’t change anything… It’s still nonsense.
Nobody knows how he will do as an on field coach or recruiter.. He hasn’t done it. Kirby is taking a chance on a friend.
Maybe he can fire up the Bulldogs to beat South Carolina this year.
Sds… Cochran made his money working with the players when the coaches couldn’t.. As an on field coach he doesn’t get that opportunity.
But apparently he wants to coach. Have to start somewhere. I guess he didn’t want to be S&C forever
Lmao!!!…You really think this will change the constant thing UGA is so great at?…Choking in the big game?…You guys are like Texas Longhorn fans…You boast and beat your chest just hoping that people around doesn’t realize that yall have not been on top of the mountain since Herschel Walker…You Georgia yards are always great for a laugh…The same team that let Justin Fields get away because the head coach didn’t have the guts to remove Jake Fromm…A new special teams coach will never change the fact that yall are the biggest underachiever in the SEC every single year…sorry
Sure boss
Well said,,, Kirby is a hell of a recruiter… And hasGeorgia positioned to be a Force year in,, and year out… BUT,,, the 2nd half collapses against Bama 2 years in a row sting… Setting up a huge matchup next year on Bama’s turf,,, I don’t see this hire being anything to be bringing collapsed dynasty talk into the picture,,,, at all… Early Prediction from the KID,,, Bama in a blowout!!!!!
Did you just refer to yourself as “the KID”?? It’s funny you’re predicting a blowout. Ut has seen a lot of those recently so I guess you’re an expert.
Yeah, right! “To be the man, you gotta beat the man!” Until that happens for the Dawgs, ehhhh.
I can’t wait for the “impersonation” video’s of Saban addressing the team.
The dynasty will be over when it’s over. enough everyone.
SDS knows titles like these draw out the trolls… We should have Ole Tim, corch and Truvols many accounts shows up soon..
Trudawg got deleted lol…Then he came back as notTrudawg and got deleted again…HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I’m sure he’ll be back again though. You just can’t keep a good troll down.
Well I expected him to show up here as bubbatime… Corch already made his appearance like I knew he would..
Where are the other Georgia trolls King Negan & TheDawgsofWar?
Patience… SDS wrote it so they will come..
I’m hoping King Neagan is in rehab somewhere…that dude seriously needs to give up the crack pipe
But Corch is here to fill in for them in the meantime..enjoy
Corch doesn’t even believe the garbage he posts…
Ah man TruDawg got deleted? Who then can possibly predict the future and clarify the past for us blind, clueless UGA fans?
Trudawg is currently on his bubbatime account… Let’s see if they ban that one too..
It’s like Christmas. I know he’ll be back though. It’s too good to be true
This is why I low-key like Georgia/Florida articles, for the trolls and bickering. Ah well I guess I fell for the click bait title
I don’t know man, first it was Monken and Newman and now Cochran. I think this may be the one that tips the scale, we should crown them already
Not when we have to go up against a genius like Mullet. He is the greatest offensive mind the world has ever seen. If he figures out wristbands we’re all in trouble.
Interesting hire. Hopefully it will work out well for UGA but he’s yet to prove himself as an on field coach.
Also what a ridiculous headline for an article. As much as I’d like to see the Tide dynasty over, I’m not counting on it until Saban retires (and even that depends on who they hire next).
Definitely not the end, Bama will still be Bama. One support staffer (no matter how good) doesn’t change that. But watching knee-jerk reactions from sports media to minor off season news and arguing over meaningless predictions is about the only fun we get to have in these dark, football-less days.
How many times is the end of the Alabama dynasty article going to be written? Now a strength coach leaving is going to be the end…I guess if you keep saying it every year eventually it might happen…but I seriously doubt this move will be what causes the end…
Typical media/twitter overreactions
Seems like a bit of an overreaction…lol
Bama has to go 8-5 three years in a row before I consider them not to be the number one obstacle in CFB.
So you admit to being a bit slow? Nice.
This isn’t the end of the dynasty, but this is a major loss. He’s been a constant since the beginning, someone with extremely rare energy and enthusiasm for the game, that has had a huge impact on Bama’s current success. Big loss for my Tide and it makes it even worse that he went to that snake Kirby.
I remember that video before the UGA game in 08′ he was running around screaming “you know why they’re wearing black??? Because they’re going to their own f’n funerals!!!”
The second I saw that I had a bad feeling. He had them boys PUMPED.
Really “snake Kirby”?? Was he supposed to stay Saban’s assistant forever instead of going to his alma mater?
The snake comment Probably has more to do with him poaching Bama staff..
None of it matters IMo as these coaches trade coaches on occasion.
And the rumored picture-gate.
“Tide dynasty over?”
no but I am thrilled with this hire. and I am sure Coach Saban will not struggled to find an elite S&C coach willing to make that kind of money so not sure how much it hurts Alabama
I seem to remember the proclamations that the dynasty was over when Kirby had his own “Mama called” moment. Great get for Georgia but Bama isn’t on life support yet.
My favorite team is supposedly the one benefitting from this, and I think the sports world is wildly overreacting.
The dynasty at Alabama will be done when NICK retires or dies. Not a minute sooner. All of this “Staffer X who’s been there since 2007” has yet to prove worth anything, and it’s been 13 years.
Learn from history already.
The question overall has to be-is Saban done? He’s been able to keep the last vestiges of his ’07 team, now this? Should be fun to watch.
I wouldn’t bet against him
Hasn’t this been said every year for like the last 4-5 years? The moment Saban starts winning 9 or less games in back to back seasons is the moment I’ll even consider that Bama dynasty may possibly be almost coming to an end. Even when Saban retires I don’t think the Bama dynasty will be over just based on how well they recruit every year. Only thing that can stop this dynasty at this moment is severe sanctions
And now Georgia fans will crown themselves champi…oh, wait…they do that every off season since 1980.
At least those Georgia fans crown themselves as actual champions. Keep enjoying being Champions of Life.
You act as if that better…
Don’t antagonize the Vol. We have no more room to talk about our accomplishments than they do.
Recruiting national champs?
Weak, tired….
No different than LSU…top talent coaches dream to coach at places like Bama and LSU. They will have no problem replacing him as influential as he may have been. Did he add value? Sure! Does that mean Bama is going to lose 6 games next year because he left? No chance.
Hey how much was that check Saban wrote to try to keep Cochran??
(seeing as he was such an integral cog in the Saban machine)
<>
or maybe…just maybe Cochran figured out just how valuable he really was, what with yet another former head coach joining the staff as an analyst.
I wonder what Saban will do to find another hyper-active, emotional, loud-mouthed, meathead strength coach….since those are in such short supply.
Maybe he didn’t like the look Saban gave him during the commercial, which was funny as hell.
The media are like sharks when they smell blood. This reminds me of Spurrier, who was basically hounded into retirement. Ironically, Spurrier was 68 when he had his last 11-2 team, and he retired two years later. Saban is 68 now. Think Dabo is ready for a career move?
Dabo isn’t leaving ClemPson to follow the GOAT. He’s a god there.
You don’t actually know that… Saban wasn’t going to be at Bama either…
You’re right I don’t KNOW this and it wouldn’t really shock me if I were wrong (it’s happened before). My point is NOBODY is going to be good enough after Saban leaves. I wouldn’t want the burden of following him. Dabo has built his own legacy at ClemPson and their pockets are just as deep as Bama’s. Maybe he really loves Bama and is waiting for Saban to leave, I don’t know what’s in his heart. If it were me I would let someone else follow Saban. Once the Tide faithful run him off then I’d consider coming back.
Honestly the right coach following Saban is setup for immediate success.. You would be walking into a program loaded with talent… IMO that would be more appealing to a coach like Dabo then walking in to a program that needs built from the ground up..
Maybe but I don’t think it will get so bad that it needs a true rebuild. Just saying I wouldn’t want to follow a legend. Maybe I’m wrong.
I understand your point but I would much rather be giving the key to a Mustang over a Fiesta…
There are a lot of trolls on here trying to get under Bama fan’s skin. There are also a lot of Bama fans in here saying its not that big of a loss. The fact of the matter is, its a very big loss. Its more of a loss to Bama than it is a gain to UGA.
SC has been at Bama since the beginning. Outside of Saban, he defines the Process more than anyone else inside that organization. He spends the most time with the players, on and off the field. He connects with the players in a way that most other coaches don’t. He is with them all of the time. He brought a whole lot to the Bama organization and most of it had nothing to do with coaching. Will it have an impact on the field in 2020? I doubt it. Will it have an impact going forward for the program? Maybe. It’s hard to replace a coach like SC.
I wish SC the best in his new endeavors and I hope he reaches his goal of being a head coach someday.
I know right? Bamatime has posted at least 50 comments. Not that big a deal. Just a guy changing jobs.
