Former Vanderbilt quarterback Jordan Rodgers knows a thing or two about playing the position.

While on the SEC Network recently (the video is also on ESPN.com), he was discussing the Alabama quarterback battle between Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa, and he thinks Tagovailoa wins the job because Hurts has lost all of his confidence and hasn’t taken a step since last year.

Rodgers mentioned that he attended the Manning Passing Academy in June, and based on his observations, Hurts was in the lower half of all passers that attended.

“Here’s my biggest concern,” Rodgers said on the SEC Network. “As a quarterback, you can not understand the offense; you can be making mistakes; a lot of things can go wrong, but when  you lose your confidence, you can no longer play the position of quarterback.

“And I go to the Manning Passing Academy every single year and see 40 of the top quarterbacks in the country. Jalen Hurts has lost his confidence. He did not throw the ball with conviction. I tell you what — he threw the ball in the lower half of all 40 quarterbacks that were there. It did not look good, and it looked like a guy that walked around without confidence and that threw without confidence. And you cannot play the quarterback position like that.”

Hurts is the biggest story in college football not named Urban Meyer right now, thanks to his media day comments.

Getting benched in the national championship for Tagovailoa seems to have taken a toll on him. Hurts struggled during the spring game, and he aired out his frustrations at media day.

At this point, it may be a surprise to see Hurts start for Alabama, although he’ll likely play. He’s a dynamic athlete who can help the Tide in multiple areas on offense.
