Texas coaching rumors: College GameDay analyst hearing that Steve Sarkisian turned down Texas
There are some major things happening in the world of college football on Saturday.
Texas fired head coach Tom Herman and the rumors are that Alabama OC Steve Sarkisian will be the next head coach in Austin.
Or will he? According to ESPN analyst David Pollack, he’s heard Sark will take the job, but he’s also heard Sark has turned the job down:

Obviously, until Texas officially announces Sarkisian as the next head coach, anything can happen. Just ask Auburn, Tennessee and some other schools that have had drama-filled coaching searches in recent years.
We’ll see what happens with Sarkisian moving forward, but as Alabama prepares for the national championship game, this will be something to watch.
It’s Pollack, so certainly not the most credible guy. That being said, the only way I could see Sark turning this down would be if he is being told that he is the coach in waiting at Alabama, and another raise is forthcoming. Otherwise, what could he be waiting for?
Texas would be a good fit for Sark, so I don’t know if he will take it or not. I do wish he would stay, but only because of the fantastic offense we have had with him here. Hope he has success there if he does take the job though. Was kind of hoping he would be coach-in-waiting at Bama though.
Agree, except Bama, Texas is the best opportunity he can get.
Do schools still do the “ coach in waiting “ deal? Haven’t heard phrase in long time. Last time was Jimbo at FSU and Muschamp at Texas.
There aren’t any out there now that I am aware of. That’s pure speculation on my part.
I would say it applies to the DC at Wisconsin right now. Leavitt, I think
I don’t think anybody is dumb enough to formally declare the situation, but I think some understandings exist. Think Lincoln Riley and Ryan Day.
Muschamp’s available . . . Just kidding!
“It’s Pollack, so certainly not the most credible guy.” Why would that be exactly? Just curious.
Have you seen and heard him? He’s pretty off the wall with many of his takes. He can be entertaining, but he’s not known as being a source for inside information. That could change if Sark does indeed decline the job.
So that’s a no then? Got it.
It’s official. Sark took the job and Pollack’s source is just as reliable as I said he was.
Strange criticism. Pollack says he heard it both ways and puts a “who knows” emoji next to the comment. What’s not reliable? He made no claim.
My guess is he said something less then flattering about LSU once in his career.
It’s a pretty target-rich environment…
And yet every credible source still says he’s taking the job.
Sark is a legit HC threat. Especially if he’s running a program like Texas. That school has been a sleeping giant ever since Mack Jones left.
It’s Mack Brown, and they weren’t great under him either.
Also, Saban may coach another 10 years. Like Joe Pa it’s only thing he does.
The Texas HC job comes with too much baggage via interference from boosters. A 16th ranked recruiting class, A & M and Oklahoma, and high expectations without total control. Why is that a dream job?
Recruiting will be the hardest problem for whoever takes over t.u., especially the competition from A&M and LSU out of the SEC and OU and OSU (Oklahoma State) in the Big 12.
Well I figured Sark probably pretty much had the bama head coaching job after Saban retires.. but Saban is still in great shape for his age.. so who knows he may coach another 5yrs or so
One thing to keep in mind if he did indeed turn this job down ( I would be shocked by the way ). Charlie Strong is currently on Sabans staff and could provide a ton of information on the inner workings of the program. There might be to much meddling by boosters or other issues Strong could warn Sark about.
Most of you people on here don’t know whether Sark will take the job at Texas. Or not. I do, but I’m not going to tell just yet.
Valuable input right here.
My guess is he has those amazingly reliable longhorn sources that are never wrong except for the 100% of the time they are.
I hope Sark knows what he’s getting in to at UT. The boosters are out of control and demand to run almost everything. It’s kind of like The Barn with more money and less inbreeding.
It’s t.u….you may be underestimating their inbreeding exponentially.
Cutty Shark would be a risky move. Last time he was a HC, he went into an alcoholic downward spiral.
He is been great at Saban’s Boot Camp Rehab for Fired Head Coaches. But I would still be cautious that without Saban’s discipline and micromanagement, would Sark revert back to his USC days
Everyone deserves a second chance but still risky especially when Texas really needs to hire a homerun
