During the National Championship Game, Alabama got a huge play from QB Tua Tagovailoa and WR DeVonta Smith to win the title in overtime, as Smith got behind a Georgia defender and hauled in a long touchdown pass.

However, this spring, Smith has been working as a defensive back in addition to his receiver responsibilities, sparking rumors of him making a switch.

Coach Nick Saban has said Smith will only be used as a DB in emergency situations, but his work on that side of the ball has still drawn the attention of teammates (via AL.com):

“When you get to this level, you very rarely see guys play both sides of the ball, but seeing him practice and do things on both sides is pretty impressive,” RB Damien Harris said. “Obviously I hope to keep him on offense, but wherever he needs to be put, I’m sure coach Saban will put him there and that’ll help make our team as successful as we can be.”

Having versatile players is never a bad thing, so getting Smith ready to play where he’s needed is a great idea this spring.

However, it sounds like we can still expect to see the title-game hero playing on offense primarily this fall.
