Video: Alabama freshman QB Jalen Hurts destroys weight room
Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts might be the strongest quarterback in college football. And he’s just a true freshman.
Courtesy of AL.com, you can see Hurts squat 500 pounds in the video provided above. Impressed? Good. Because that was two years ago when he was a junior in high school. Matt Zenitz reports that Hurts was part of his high school’s powerlifting team as a sophomore and junior, and ended up squatting 570 pounds last year at a meet.
Again, he’s a freshman. A freshman quarterback — not a lineman — mind you. Can’t stress that enough.
You can also see him bench 275 pounds and deadlift 565 pounds, which we can only assume will improve over the duration of his stay in Tuscaloosa. Incredible stuff.
Pretty good for a freshman, good job.
As a powerlifter myself, those are some very legit lifts for someone his age… and it becomes even more notable to see him doing it as a quarterback. Pretty cool.
They looked ok, but I wouldn’t say its legit. There is some ego lifting here, and he would benefit from a lighter load. I know he was lifting for 1 rep max, but the squat did not go past 90 degrees, and the 565 lb deadlift made my lower disk ache. It’s a lot of weight, and super impressive, but he doesn’t need to ego lift. It comes back to haunt you in old age. IMHO
Holy crap… It’s stuff like this that makes me not feel to great about myself. Lol.
I figured it would be “stuff” more like when you look in the mirror, see your paycheck, look down while in the shower, pull up to your trailer, brush your tooth, or attempt to read pretty much anything. Anyhow, that’s decent strength for a QB, I guess, but I’m not sure why this would be article worthy, except for the fact he’s lifting an above average amount of weight while wearing a leotard.
Man, your jokes are very original and witty. Never heard any comedic genius like that before. Anyway, in typical barner fashion, you’re clueless as to what you’re attempting to speak on. Alabama didn’t have a single non-lineman squat over 555 this spring. This kid did 570 at a meet his junior year of high school. The numbers that this kid puts up are insane for his age. The fact you called his lifting “decent strength for a QB” shows how little you know.
Great comeback! You obviously have never been in a weight room. There’s no reason for an article on this. That’s not a supernatural amount of weight to max out with doing one rep is all I’m trying to say. I wouldn’t expect someone who thinks that’s “insane” to know much about athletics. UofA actually limits the amount of weight they allow players to squat to prevent injury like most schools do. That is why you quoting how much weight other players on the team have and have not squatted makes no sense. Pretty much any high school in America has a few guys that can max a squat out at that weight, so how is this newsworthy when it’s that common? I take nothing away from the kid as he’s definitely a beast, I just don’t think it’s “insane.” I’m sure thou are easily impressed though. Think of another dumbass comeback like the first one and leave it for me to comeback and be entertained by stupidity, please.
Dlp stop acting like you are strong and cool you probably got bullied in school and have no athletic talent
The kid placed second at the state meet for powerlifting in the athletically rich state of Texas. You’re telling me there are kids in every high school his size that can do these weights? I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you’re the clueless one here man.
I just dream we start him at the beginning of the season. Strong like a RB and a dual threat. I want 3 years of him. The receivers (and TE) are so good that he will be fine. Its just so hard to overlook the freshman status. If he was put in and we lose either USC or Ole Miss then the blowback would be bad. “why is a freshman playing QB”
As an elite pro raw powerlifter and record holder myself, someone of his stature squatting 570 is impressive….. If it was raw. He is wearing a single ply squat suit. Depending on the how tight it is (and it looks to be the right size, aka tight), they add approximately 100lbs to your lift. Either way, 570 is still 570. But the suit springs you back up. He won’t be wearing that in the bama weight room. I would be curious to see his real max.
