The Alabama Crimson Tide are Tua Tagovailoa’s team now, but that doesn’t mean Jalen Hurts isn’t a key player for the No. 1 team in the country.

On a two-play stretch in the first half against Mizzou on Saturday night, Hurts lined up as a receiver, took a sweep and completed a pass to RB Damien Harris for 11 yards. Then, on the next play, Hurts caught a seven-yard slant.

Alabama fans love seeing the backup quarterback contributing in creative ways, and after the game, coach Nick Saban said Hurts did a good job both as a versatile weapon and as a quarterback after taking over for Tagovailoa in the second half (via AL.com):

“He has played a lot, and he has done very well in games,” Saban said of Hurts. “I think he did a great job of managing the game when he was in. We were trying to run the ball, shrink the game a little bit and keep it away from them. I thought he did a really good job. We have confidence in Jalen. He has really improved as a pocket passer. We are really pleased with the way he played today, and we have been pleased with the way he has played all year.”

Harris, who caught the sweep pass from Hurts, said he loves the different looks Hurts brings to the Alabama offense:

“Jalen’s a great athlete,” Harris said. “The good thing for him is he can do a lot of things and we can put him anywhere on the field. Obviously we know he can play quarterback at a high level. But his versatility … and he adds a different dynamic to our offense now.”

As Hurts’s role in the offense continues to grow, Alabama’s opponents will have trouble stopping him. He can do everything on the field, and that’s a great tool to have.
