DeVonta Smith’s pick to the Philadelphia Eagles helped Alabama set a record that may solidify the Crimson Tide as WRU.

Smith was taken No. 10 overall, but he followed teammate Jaylen Waddle, who went to the Miami Dolphins at No. 6. Smith will be reunited with Jalen Hurts in Philly, while Waddle will be reunited with Tua Tagovailoa with the Dolphins. That meant that Alabama is the first program in the common draft era to have two wide receivers selected in the first round in consecutive drafts.

The duo follows last year’s pair of Henry Ruggs III going No. 12 to the Las Vegas Raiders, and Jerry Jeudy being chosen at No. 15 by the Denver Broncos.

Waddle played in only six games last season because of a broken left ankle, while Smith went on to win the Heisman Trophy in a dominant season. Smith averaged 176 receiving yards and 2.7 touchdown catches in Alabama’s postseason sweep of Florida, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

It was a show of dominance by the Alabama and SEC early on. Six of the top 10 picks were from the SEC, three from Alabama.

This is nothing new for Alabama faithful. Alabama has had at least one player selected in the first round for 13 consecutive years and this is the 5th year in that span that the first-round group included at least one wide receiver.
