Arkansas’ basketball season has started on the wrong note, without a second even being played.

First, the university announced that Connor Vanover, a transfer from Cal following the 2018-19 season, had his waiver request for immediate eligibility declined by the NCAA. Vanover, who moved to Fayetteville to be closer to his sick grandmother, averaged 7.5 points per game across 28 games and 15 starts for the Bears last season, including 3.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game.

Also, sophomore forward Reggie Chaney has received an immediate suspension for a team rules violation. The 6-foot-8 Chaney played in 34 games as a freshman and started 2 while recording 5.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.44 blocks per game. His best game came on Mar. 19 in the NIT against Providence, where he posted 14 points, 5 rebounds and 7 blocks.

The Razorbacks, led by 1st-year head coach Eric Musselman, finished 23-12 (10-8 SEC) en route to a 2nd-round appearance in the NIT. However, head coach Mike Anderson was fired following the season, with the program hiring bringing Musselman in from Nevada as his replacement. Musselman was 110-34 with the Wolf Pack and led the team to 3 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
