On the lists of coaches on the hot seat, Arkansas’ Bret Bielema is not at the top of the list, but he’s drawn some attention in that area after four seasons and a 25-26 record, including a 10-22 record in the SEC.

Speaking at the Northwest Arkansas Touchdown Club this week, former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer told attendees to pump the breaks on that talk, according to a report from Hawgs 247. Beamer, who was at Virginia Tech for 29 years, said Bielema was a good choice.

“I think you hire a good coach and I think you guys have a great coach here at Arkansas,” Beamer said when interviewed by host Bo Mattingly. “I think after that, if you have a good one and he’s doing things the right way, you give him time because it’s going to come around.”

Beamer recalled that he had a slow start at Virginia Tech, including a .379 winning percentage through Beamer’s first six seasons, and four losing seasons in his first six years.

“I don’t know what the exact record is here, but I think he’s a good, good coach and has solid principles,” Beamer said. “Those guys end up winning. Those guys end up getting the job done, in my opinion.”

Virginia Tech and Arkansas, of course, have a recent history from last season’s Belk Bowl when the Razorbacks had a 24-0 lead at halftime, and the Hokies scored 35 unanswered points to win 35-24. That’s become a trend throughout Bielema’s tenure at Arkansas.

Speaking with reporters after the event, Beamer said Arkansas could learn from the collapse against Virginia Tech.

“I think you start looking at different things and you learn from it, and be better because of it,” Beamer said. “I’m sure that’s what Coach (Bielema) has done.

“You know I – sometimes, a lot of times – I think the values in life you learn more from a loss sometimes than from a win, because you kind of go back and analyze what happened a lot more.”
