Sam Pittman assesses brutal loss to Oklahoma State: ‘We gotta hold on to the football’

Sam Pittman thinks Arkansas’ game against Oklahoma State would have ended differently had Arkansas protected the football better. The Razorbacks, despite vastly outplaying the Cowboys for most of the game, fell 39-31 in double overtime to fall to 1-1 on the season.

Here’s what Arkansas’ head coach had to say postgame:

Well. He’s not wrong.

Arkansas fans would agree: Saturday was a terribly painful day of football in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Both teams had their fair share of miscues, but Arkansas led most statistical categories by the end of the day. They outrushed OK State by 173 yards and totaled just under 100 more yards passing. Arkansas posted 12 more first downs and held the ball for 13 minutes longer.

But the Razorbacks lost the turnover battle, by far the game-changer Saturday in Oklahoma. Arkansas fumbled the ball twice and threw a pick-6 that ended up just killing the Razorbacks at the most inopportune moments.

It wasn’t just that. Arkansas also turned the ball over on downs twice and missed 2 field goals. You’re not going to beat many top 25 teams like that, especially on their home field. It’s obvious Arkansas has taken a step from last year, but there are still a lot of loose ends to clean up before this team can compete for anything of relevance.
