Auburn’s defensive coaching staff for the 2024 season is complete.

Hugh Freeze promoted Vontrell King-Williams into the role of defensive tackles coach on Friday. King-Williams was a defensive analyst for Auburn in 2023 and previously worked for Freeze at Liberty.

“I’m super grateful for the opportunity given to me by Coach Freeze and Coach Durkin,” King-Williams said in a press release. “I believe in what we are building here at Auburn and can’t wait to continue to positively impact the lives of our student-athletes. War Eagle!”

As part of the announcement, Auburn also finalized specific roles for each of its defensive assistant coaches. Here’s what Auburn’s staff will look like in 2024:

  • DJ Durkin: Defensive coordinator and linebackers
  • Charles Kelly: Co-defensive coordinator and safeties
  • Wesley McGriff: Cornerbacks
  • Josh Aldridge: Edge rushers
  • Vontrell King-Williams: Defensive tackles

Here is the official announcement:

King-Williams has also spent time at Eastern Michigan and UTSA during his young coaching career. He spent 3 seasons on Freeze’s staff at Liberty from 2020-22.

“Vontrell is an incredibly hard worker, passionate about his craft, and earned the respect of his players during his time with me at Auburn and Liberty,” Freeze said in a statement. “He has a tremendous upside and reminds me of the likes of Jeremy Garrett, Tray Scott and Freddie Roach, who have all worked for me early in their careers.”
