It can be very difficult for a program to lure a coach away from his alma mater.

Now that we’ve seen the figures Auburn put in front of Bryan Harsin to leave Boise State, the decision seems like an obvious one to make.

After making $1.85 million to coach Boise State in 2020, Harsin agreed to a six-year contract worth an average of $5.25 million to take over the Auburn program. Harsin’s salary starts out at $5 million and will annually add $100,000 each season.

Details of Harsin’s Auburn contract were first shared by ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

Harsin’s contract also features several hefty bonuses for achievements on the field. Those include a $100,000 bonus for winning the division and $250,000 for winning the league title. Leading Auburn to a New Year’s Six bowl will net Harsin another $200,000 bonus, reaching the Playoff results in a $300,000 bonus, reaching the title game results in a $400,000 bonus and winning a national title would net an $800,000 bonus for the coach.

The coach also has a hefty buyout if fired, as Auburn would owe him 70 percent of his remaining contract if fired without cause during his tenure at the school. Additionally, if Harsin left Auburn within the first year, he would owe the school $7 million.

That figure drops to $5 million in year two, $3 million in year three, $2 million in year four and $1 million in year five.
