In the NFL preseason, starters typically don’t play much. In the Carolina Panthers’ first preseason game of 2016 last night, that held true for Cam Newton.

Newton played in just one series, going 5-for-6 through the air for 36 yards. The Panthers would kick a field goal that possession.

That was the good part of the night for Newton. Then, despite his time on the field being over, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Auburn’s night turned a little sour.

Later in the first quarter, Panthers linebacker A.J. Klein intercepted a pass from Baltimore’s Ryan Mallett, who played his college ball at Arkansas. Klein would go on to return the interception into a 95-yard touchdown. But, that’s before Newton’s emotions got the best of him.

On the opposite sideline of the return, a flag was thrown because Newton came on the field to celebrate. This rule, keeping players who aren’t participants and coaches off the field, is one of the NFL’s six points of emphasis for its officials this season.

“I just got too excited,” said Newton at his post-game press conference via ESPN.com. “I was hoping they would give a warning.”

The star signal caller was then asked if he said anything to Klein about the penalty.

“Next question,” he said. “I don’t want to have a discussion about something that I’ve learned from. You live and you learn. … It happened. We all learn something as a team. We’re moving forward.”

Apparently, Newton is taking the penalty as seriously as you can for a preseason game, and the NFL is making its six points of emphasis known early in the season. Despite the penalty bringing back a touchdown, Carolina would get the ball back and score a touchdown the next possession anyway.

The Panthers eventually lost the game, 22-19.
