Auburn coach Gus Malzahn admitted to making a mistake over counting the number of games freshman running back Asa Martin played during the season, but in his first press conference in nearly three weeks, he also contradicted major details Martin’s mother, Sharay Harris’, side of the story.

“So it was a new (redshirt) rule this year with the four games (without losing eligibility),” Malzahn said in his most recent press conference. “Earlier in the year, there was a coach that thought it was three, and one of them thought it was four. But after game six, everybody knew that he was playing.”

That’s not what Harris told AL.com one week ago. She said at least one coach told her and the Martin family that after playing in “game six”, which was against Mississippi State, he could still redshirt. Harris told the unnamed coach that that was no longer possible.

If Auburn’s counting mistake was made before the Mississippi State game, the Tigers could have still redshirted Martin because at that point, he had only played in four games. Still, Malzahn continued to tell his side of the story.

“Yeah, it was a mistake from the standpoint that one thought it was three, one thought it was four,” the Auburn coach said. “But that was about game five, and then of course, game six, everybody was on the same page.”

Malzahn also said that Martin received the chance to play after burning his redshirt, but that’s not really true either. Following the Mississippi State game, Martin didn’t play again until at the end of a 53-0 blowout victory on Nov. 17.

Not surprisingly, Martin is transferring and plans to visit an ACC school this weekend.
