Gus Malzahn breaks down game-winning TD, talks QB Joey Gatewood's role going forward
It’s Wednesday, but SEC media members still want to talk about what happened Saturday night in Dallas.
Auburn coach Gus Malzahn appeared on the weekly media teleconference and was asked about the decision to go for the touchdown late in the Oregon game as well as whether QB Bo Nix threw to his first read. Malzahn was also asked about Tulane and QB Joey Gatewood’s role moving forward:
- On Joey Gatewood’s role: He is getting all the second-team reps with our offense each week. He is ready to be called upon at any time. There are things we think he can do and bring to our offense.
- On Auburn going for it late vs. Oregon: we had 16 seconds left, we wanted to get a little closer. We wanted to get Seth Williams one on one. Nix saw it and he threw it – the rest is history.
- On calling the offensive plays: That’s what I’ve done most of my career, I’m more engaged with the players (doing it).
- On Tulane: They play hard and they have veterans everywhere. You can tell they are veterans that are well-coached, that’s what has stood out to me.
- On if he voted for Tulane in Top 25: I have a lot of respect for them, they are in the conversation, I’ll put it that way.
- On Bo Nix’s game-winning throw: was that his first read? Like I said, we had been looking for Seth in a one-on-one situation.
- On Auburn’s run game: we had over 200 rushing yards, that was key in the game, that really helped in the second half and was a key to everything.
