Gus Malzahn does his best to assess Auburn's high-yardage, low-scoring win over Ole Miss
In the box score, 500 yards is a strong outing for a team’s offense. On the scoreboard, 20 points is a low-scoring game. Auburn oddly did both on Saturday in a 20-14 win over Ole Miss.
After the game, AU coach Gus Malzahn was asked to make sense of the statically-odd win for his No. 11 Tigers. He also touched on a few individual performances, including K Anders Carlson’s rough night.
Here are the highlights of what Malzahn said in his postgame press conference:
- Extremely proud of team for a hard-fought victory.
- The first two drives of the second half were key.
- No hesitation to kick the late FG. Carlson’s three misses were uncharacteristic, Malzahn still confident in him.
- On lack of points: “500 yards of offense and 20 points, they don’t equal up.”
- On how he asses offensive performance: “Well, we won. That’s how we assess it.”
- On Bo Nix’s career-high 340 yards: He did some good things tonight.
- Malzahn hopes to see Nix and Seth Williams improve their connection after an off game.
- Marlon Davidson tried to warm up, but was unable to go Saturday.
- “We felt like we had some things where we can hit quick throws and get into tempo.”
- D.J. Williams had some impressive runs.
- Does he wish he handled Joey Gatewood situation differently?: “He’s not with us and we wish him nothing but the best.”
- On special teams (missed FGs, big punt return given up): “We got to do a better job of that. That was real unusual, because we’ve been doing a super job.”
