Everyone is waiting to see Auburn freshman QB Joey Gatewood. However, it won’t be against Washington.

The 6-foot-4, 232-pound dual-threat QB was ruled out for Saturday’s game against Washington with a thumb issue, Gus Malzahn said Tuesday. Of course, Gatewood was at-best the third string signal caller, and now, Cord Sandberg steps into that slot. Sandberg is the former minor league baseball player who just arrived at Auburn this month.

“Cord’s really progressing,” Malzahn said. “He’s really impressed coach (Chip) Lindsey with everything that goes with it.”

Gatewood has a ton of upside and, depending on how Auburn’s running game progresses, could be thought of as a short-yardage back. The new redshirt rule also could have an impact on Gatewood getting into games early in the season to see how he handles certain situations.

Jarrett Stidham is the starter, while Malik Willis is the backup. Those two are certainly set ahead of the showdown against the Huskies.
