Could Gus Malzahn make a quick return to the football field as a head coach?

The Orlando Sentinel and 247Sports are reporting that the UCF Knights have offered the former Auburn head coach its vacant job. Tennessee hired away Josh Heupel from UCF, and now, the Knights have a vacant position.

Malzahn spent 8 seasons at Auburn going 68-35 overall, including a 39-27 record in the SEC. He was then fired by the school in early December following a 6-4 2020 season. Auburn owes Malzahn over $21 million for his buyout.

UCF’s new athletic director Terry Mohajir worked with Malzahn at Arkansas State. UCF is a program that Malzahn could thrive at, too, as his offense would put up numbers against UCF’s competition much like Scott Frost’s and Heupel’s did.

Malzahn is one of several really good options for UCF and its talented roster. It’s unclear as to whether Malzahn would take the job, but this would certainly be a great opportunity for him, assuming he wants to coach again right away.
