Two of Auburn’s closest staffers to Gus Malzahn resigned Tuesday.

Auburn’s director of football operations, Jamie Croley, and administrator for the program, David Gunn, resigned. At the time of the initial report, it was unknown what avenues they were pursuing, and it’s still unknown why Gunn resigned.

However, Croley, Malzahn’s brother-in-law, told AL.com that he left the program to start a charitable foundation based in Auburn.

“I want to help this foundation get started,” Croley said. “I still get to work with family, both Gus and Kristi now. … It’s an opportunity that I feel like to give back to people. The goal is to get that thing up and running.”

Croley has been one of Malzahn’s closest staffers, obviously being family, and he came to Auburn with Malzahn from Arkansas State. Croley has been a part of Malzahn’s career since his high school days in Arkansas.

“At this point it was a good time for me to step out and kind of recharge my battery,” Croley told the site. “I’ve got a goal, I’ve got a vision, I’ve got something that I attain. At the end of the day, you know you’re helping somebody.”

Croley also said the door for a future return to Auburn has been left open in the director of football operations role, but he added that he’s ready to take some time away from football.
