Here are a few grades from Auburn’s 31-7 win over Samford:

OFFENSE: B-

The Tigers got off to a slow start offensively, failing to score in the first quarter. Auburn totaled 386 yards of total offense against a Samford defense that played well. Nick Marshall, despite a few inexplicable sacks, had a nice night throwing the football completing 11-of-18 passes for 171 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Cameron Artis-Payne led an Auburn rushing attack that ran for 200 yards.

DEFENSE: A-

There were some improvements for an Auburn defense that had struggled during the past month. The Tigers created some pressure on Samford quarterback Michael Eubank. Auburn forced two turnovers, with Jonathon Mincy and Kris Frost intercepting Eubank passes. The Tigers allowed just 113 yards rushing on 38 attempts and 125 yards passing.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B

Daniel Carlson made his only field goal attempt, and got plenty of reps punting after Jimmy Hutchinson shanked the games first punt. Corey Grant and Quan Bray had a solid night on kick return for the Tigers.

COACHING: A-

Gus Malzahn, Rhett Lashlee and Ellis Johnson had good plans for a good Samford team. Credit Malzahn and his staff for making adjustments after a slow start during the first half. Auburn pulled away and was in control for most of the second half.

OVERALL: B+

Auburn did some positive things on Saturday night, but by no means dominated the game. The Tigers are happy to get out of there with a win and no major injuries as they begin preparations for the Iron Bowl next weekend. Expect a much more motivated team next week, a team that plays more disciplined and ready to play.
