The coronavirus pandemic is having a significant impact on athletic departments everywhere. On Monday, Clemson announced that Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney is taking a pay cut of $687,500 for 2020.

Swinney’s pay cut is significant. USA TODAY notes the amount is more than the annual salaries of at least 24 FBS head coaches. Fans, however, don’t need to feel too bad about Swinney. Scott Keepfer of the Greenville News notes that the Clemson coach was scheduled to make $8.25 million this year as part of a 10-year, $93 million extension signed in April 2019. With the pay cut, Swinney will still make $7,562,500.

Swinney’s pay cut comes as Clemson has announced furloughs for some employees making more than $50,000. The furloughs range from 2-12 days in the window of Sept. 1-Dec. 31. One Swinney assistant, first-year wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham, is among the athletic department employees furloughed. Swinney was Clemson’s wide receivers coach from 2003-08.
