Hoping to improve on the program’s ranking of 89th in the nation in points allowed per game (30.8), Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema picked Smith to replace Chris Ash as Arkansas’ defensive coordinator in 2014. Smith coached on Greg Schiano’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers staff in 2013 as the NFL franchise’s linebackers coach.

Smith brings to Fayetteville 14 years of college coaching experience including a recent four-year stint at Rutgers. In 2012, his Scarlet Knights defense ranked fourth in the nation in points allowed per game (14.2), sixth in rush yards allowed per game (95.2) and 10th in total defense (311.6 YPG).
