The 2024 SEC Basketball Tournament has produced an intriguing weekend, leading all the way up to an improbable final on Sunday. The final will be between Florida and Auburn on Sunday in a matchup that many people may not have predicted.

Florida started its journey against Georgia. After a hard-fought 5-point win, Florida then faced Alabama, who the Gators had just upset shortly before the tournament. The Gators then secured a spot in the final with a win over surging Texas A&M.

For Auburn, it caught South Carolina in the quarterfinals. Then, the Tigers had to deal with a Mississippi State team that was fresh off of an upset of No. 1 seeded Tennessee. Bruce Pearl’s team did everything it had to reach the final at the end of day.

10

It’s been many years since Florida last won an SEC Tournament. Fans would have to go back to 2014 to find that last title. The Gators beat Kentucky by 1 point for a 61-60 win that season. Florida made a deep run in the NCAA Tournament that year which ended with a loss in the national championship.

Florida needed a deep run in the SEC Tournament to build momentum for March Madness and now the Gators have their eyes fixed on bringing home some hardware before then. Walter Clayton Jr. and company will be trying to break a decade-long streak for the Gainesville faithful.

18%

Auburn and Florida are already familiar with one another after playing in the regular season. The Tigers struggled offensively and only scored 65 points in the loss. The 3-point percentage from the game for Auburn was a miserable 18%.

This was an impressive feat for the Florida defense considering that Auburn has been one of the better 3-point shooting teams in the SEC. The Tigers are currently 4th in that stat in the conference, making 35.4% of their 3-point attempts.

If the Florida defense can stifle Auburn from range again, it could be the Gators cutting down the nets and not the Tigers.

4-5

Florida had its fair share of games against ranked competition this season. Todd Golden coached the Gators to a 4-5 record against ranked teams in the 2023-2024 season. Florida also earned ranked wins over Alabama and Auburn, including Friday’s tournament upset of the Crimson Tide.

The only other SEC teams with more ranked wins were Tennessee (6) and Kentucky (5). Auburn also beat 4 ranked teams this season. Florida and Auburn have proven multiple times this season that big games don’t scare them.

68.1

Auburn has been locking down teams in the SEC this season. The Tigers come into Sunday’s matchup with 68.1 points allowed per game, which is the 3rd-best number in the SEC.

The defense has traveled with Auburn in the tournament as well. Auburn held South Carolina in check on Friday, holding the Gamecock offense to just 55 points. Mississippi State was held to 66 points on Saturday as the Tigers secured their spot in the final.

Florida has been able to put up some really impressive scoring numbers so far and has another date with the Auburn defense. The Gators scored 81 points in the regular season meeting.

It’s anyone’s guess as to what team will take home the crown. Tipoff will be at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN.
