Bill Self will miss Thursday’s Big 12 quarterfinal game against West Virginia because of an illness, the program announced.

Assistant coach Norm Roberts will serve as the acting coach for the game. The program did not announce any more details beyond Self receiving care at the University of Kansas Health System. Harold R. Kuntz of FOX-4 Kansas City reported that it’s much more serious.

The Jayhawks are trying to defend their Big 12 Tournament title after they’ve already defended their Big 12 regular-season championship.

Joe Lunardi of ESPN late Wednesday night said Kansas is the No. 1 overall seed: “We broke the KU/Alabama tie on the basis of quality wins (advantage Kansas) and strength of conference won (also advantage Kansas).”

Kansas, therefore, benefits from a strong Big 12. The Big 12 had 6 teams in the AP Top 25 most of the season, and it will likely land at least 7 in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. It could be as many as 8 or 9 depending on what happens in the conference tournament this week.
