It was a tough day for the Army Black Knights, who finished their regular season at 9-2.

The program was set to play in the Independence Bowl as they were in the first year of a contract that guaranteed them a slot against a Pac-12 program in the annual game in alternate years. However, it will not go as originally planned.

Due to a lack of available Pac-12 teams, the Black Knights will not be able to participate in the Independence Bowl this year as the game has been canceled, its organizers announced on Sunday. It is the 1st-ever cancellation for the Independence Bowl.

“The opting-out of possible teams created a lack of teams available to play in bowl games and the 2020 Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl,” the Independence Bowl Foundation said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing the tradition that we have worked tirelessly to uphold since 1976 and hosting two great teams for the 2021 (game).”

The Black Knights accepted the bid on Oct. 24, nearly 2 months before bowl selections were made for FBS teams. But after it looked like they would have 1 final game, the season will come to an unfortunate end for the Black Knights.
