Michigan State QB Aidan Chiles over 0.5 interceptions
I’m going back to the well here with Chiles, who continues to be a turnover machine for Michigan State. He had an interception and a fumble in the loss to Ohio State last weekend, bringing his season INT total up to 8. Only East Carolina’s Jake Garcia has more. And Garcia is the only FBS quarterback with more turnover-worthy plays than Chiles (14). The Spartans are facing an Oregon team that ranks third nationally in passes defended this season. The Ducks have been unlucky turning those plays into interceptions (6.4 expected picks, but just 4 actual interceptions), but they shouldn’t have any trouble getting 1 off Chiles in Friday night’s matchup.
Missouri WR Luther Burden over 75.5 receiving yards
I think Missouri’s star receiver is due a big game and Texas A&M’s secondary is the one to have it against. Burden entered the season viewed by many as the best wide receiver in the country. Through 4 games, he has 4 touchdown catches, but he isn’t even the leader on his own team in receptions or yardage. Theo Wease Jr. has Burden in both categories. Missouri’s shot game hasn’t turned over yet this season, and that has hurt Burden’s prodution. Last year, he had 22 receptions of at least 20 yards. He has only 4 in his first 4 games this year.
Per Game on Paper, Texas A&M ranks 63rd nationally in yards allowed per dropback and it ranks 90th in EPA per dropback allowed. If there’s a way to attack this Aggie defense, it’s via the air. A&M’s top corners have all given up some huge plays this season through the air, and they’ve been beaten after the catch. I expect Missouri to funnel the ball to Burden to try and get him going. There’s a matchup in the slot to exploit.
Wisconsin RB Tawee Walker over 67.5 rushing yards
Even in a backfield partnership with Chez Mellusi last week, Walker got 12 carries for 55 yards and 2 touchdowns. He cleared double-digit attempts in 3 games for the Badgers while in a timeshare and the red zone work was a promising indicator of how much the staff trusts Walker. Now that Mellusi is no longer in the picture, Walker figures to be the leading man in the Wisconsin rushing attack. That provides value this week, where his rushing total feels too low given how inept Purdue has looked at stopping the run. The Boilermakers have given up 35 explosive run plays in 4 games and they rank 97th nationally in rushing success rate allowed. Wisconsin’s plan of attack should be to run and run often.
Louisville QB Tyler Shough over 266.5 passing yards
The quarterback position in a Jeff Brohm offense always offers a high statistical ceiling. Shough, healthy this year for the Cards, has already thrown for 1,114 yards and 11 touchdowns in 4 games. He’s averaging 9.5 yards per pass attempt and just threw his first interception of the season last week against Notre Dame’s vaunted secondary — a group he threw for 264 yards on. SMU has 9 interceptions this season but ranks 109th in yards allowed per dropback. It’s a bit too bend-don’t-break.
Derek Peterson does a bit of everything, not unlike Taysom Hill. He has covered Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Pac-12, and now delivers CFB-wide content.
