Western Michigan has parted ways with head coach Tim Lester, as the school announced Monday afternoon.

Lester posted a winning overall record of 37-32 over 6 seasons, despite not appearing in the conference title game or winning the MAC West. Lester had three years remaining on his contract, and the school is anticipated to pay him $500,000.

“The upcoming college football playoff expansion and the incredible foundation for success we have within our football program provides an exciting national opportunity for Bronco Football. It is imperative that we seize this opportunity by pursuing a new direction within our football program,” said director of athletics Dan Bartholomae. “Western Michigan University can set the standard for football in the MAC, which in turn will position us for success in the new and evolving college football landscape. We will immediately embark on a search to welcome a leader that shares this aspirational vision.”

Western Michigan is expected to hire a search firm and will conduct a national search according to a report from Pete Thamel of ESPN.
