After Texas A&M pulled out of the Gator Bowl due to a COVID-19 outbreak, a search for a replacement opponent for Wake Forest has been taking place. However, it appears it will soon be over.

According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, the Gator Bowl is likely to feature either Rutgers or Illinois as the team that will be taking on Wake Forest. Both the Scarlet Knights and Fighting Illini went 5-7 during the regular season.

It isn’t yet clear which of the 2 is the front-runner to appear in the game, as Thamel noted the Demon Deacons are still waiting to find out who they’ll play. But Thamel reported that other programs outside of Rutgers and Illinois have been eliminated from consideration.

The Scarlet Knights won 3 straight non-conference games to open the season, before they went 2-7 in Big Ten play. They ended the regular season with back-to-back losses to Penn State and Maryland.

The Fighting Illini started 1-4, before they won 4 of their final 7 regular-season games. They ended with a win over Northwestern.

The Gator Bowl is scheduled for Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. ET on ESPN.
