Other rivalries are decades older, but few can match the historical significance of Florida vs. Florida State.
The rivalry began in 1958 — after years of legislative attempts to get the two programs on the field failed. Finally, with help from then-Florida Gov. LeRoy Collins, the two school presidents agreed to play. A rivalry unlike most others was born.
The Gators and Seminoles have taken turns ending each other’s championship dreams. In every matchup from 1987-2001, at least one of the teams was ranked in the top 10 at kickoff — and in 13 of those games, both teams were ranked in the top 10.
In 1994, they famously played to a 31-31 tie in what became known as the “Choke at Doak” after the Gators squandered a 31-3 lead. In 1996, No. 2 FSU outlasted No. 1 Florida 24-21 in the regular season, but the Gators quickly gained revenge by dominating the Seminoles 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl to win their first national championship.
Here’s what you need to know about the Florida-FSU rivalry.
