Bryan Harsin left Boise State after seven seasons there to become Auburn’s head coach last month. That left the Broncos needing to hire a new head coach of their own, after Harsin had led them to a 69-19 record during his tenure.

Now, it appears that Boise State has decided who will be in charge of trying to maintain its recent success. According to B.J. Rains of the Idaho Press, the Broncos are expected to hire Andy Avalos as their next head coach.

Avalos served as the defensive coordinator/inside linebackers coach at Oregon the past two seasons. However, he has a long history with Boise State, as he played for the Broncos from 2001-05, and he was an assistant for them from 2012-18. He was Boise State’s defensive line coach from 2012-13, its linebackers coach from 2014-15, and its defensive coordinator/linebackers coach from 2016-18.

Now, Avalos is rejoining the Broncos for his first opportunity to serve as a head coach.

Avalos’ coaching career began as a graduate assistant for Colorado in 2008, then he served as the defensive line coach at Nebraska-Kearney from 2009-10. After spending 2011 as a graduate assistant at Sacramento State, he went to Boise State.

According to Rains, Avalos beat out several other candidates, including Montana State head coach Jeff Choate and USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, for the Broncos’ head-coaching job. Earlier this week, it was reported that Florida offensive coordinator Brian Johnson was interviewing for the position.

Another name that was rumored during Boise State’s search was Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, a former Broncos quarterback. However, he decided to stay in the NFL with the Cowboys, news that came after Troy Aikman of Fox Sports shared that Moore had been offered, and had accepted, the Boise State job, but there was “a lot in the story” that led to him staying in Dallas.
