Anthony Richardson will start the Indianapolis Colts’ first preseason game on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills.

Richardson told reporters that coach Shane Steichen shared the news with him before Thursday’s practice as the starters will play about a quarter of the game.

“I’m excited,” the former Florida QB said. “Hopefully we can put up some points early.”

Consistency is the name of the game, Richardson said.

Richardson, a raw prospect with a high ceiling coming into the NFL Draft this past spring, is a quarterback where fans and media have discussed how quickly he would reach the starting lineup. Owner Jim Irsay drafted Richardson No. 4 overall and believes Richardson can be a franchise quarterback, and to reach that level, Richardson needs to play early.

As the Colts work Richardson into the fold, veteran Gardner Minshew will likely be the other option to get time in the starting role, especially early in the regular season.
