Billy Napier has reportedly landed on a starting quarterback for Florida heading into the weekend.

On Friday, Napier revealed that Florida’s coach staff had “seen enough” to confirm a starting QB. However, he revealed an announcement was coming at a later date.

An official announcement is still forthcoming, but Napier and his staff reportedly landed on Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz as the team’s starter. According to Nick de la Torre with On3 Sports, Napier named Mertz the starter coming out of the performance in Thursday’s scrimmage.

“We need to go through a process with the team, with an evaluation, before we let people know,” Napier said Friday about informing the quarterbacks and the rest of the team. Mertz was competing with Jack Miller and Max Brown for the job and was the most experienced player in the group.

Mertz played parts of 4 seasons for Wisconsin with 5,405 career yards and 38 touchdowns. Miller began his career at Ohio State and started Florida’s bowl game last season, going 13-for-22 for 180 yards.

Florida’s season opener comes on the road in the Pac-12, facing Utah in a Thursday night primetime affair. As long as Mertz holds onto the starting job, his first SEC start with the Gators will be against Tennessee on Sept. 16.
