Billy Napier and the Florida coaching staff have “seen enough” to select a starting quarterback, but an announcement will be made at a later date.

“We need to go through a process with the team, with an evaluation, before we let people know,” Napier said Friday about informing the quarterbacks and the rest of the team.

Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz is competing with Jack Miller and Max Brown.

Mertz, who has 2 years of eligibility remaining, last season threw for 2,136 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 2022, and averaged just 178.0 yards per game through the air. He had a 57.3% completion rate.

Napier has previously applauded Mertz’ leadership and work ethic, along with his experience and preparation.

Earlier this week, Napier mentioned that the body of work for the quarterbacks was in, but that 3 practices and a scrimmage would ultimately help decide the starter.

Mertz and Miller each played one half with the starting offense in the Orange & Blue Game in the spring. Mertz finished 18 of 29 for 244 yards and a touchdown then, while Miller completed 10 of 20 pass attempts for 144 yards and a touchdown.
