Dan Mullen overachieved in his first season at Florida, leading the Gators to 10 wins and a New Year’s Six bowl victory.

So Florida fans won’t be happy to hear that Mullen is being talked about as a potential candidate to fill one of the NFL’s eight open head coaching spots, according to NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah.

College coaches have become more desirable as the NFL has begun shifting toward the college game and the wide-open offenses that populate it. Mullen fits the mold as an offensive mind, too, especially because he has long been on the cutting edge of innovation as offensive coordinator at Florida and head coach at Mississippi State.

Kliff Kingsbury is the best example of this and perhaps the hottest name on the coaching market despite becoming USC’s offensive coordinator last month, though Mullen may also generate a ton of interest from coach-needy teams. It’s all a matter of whether Mullen wants to stay in Gainesville, where he’s already ahead of schedule trying to rebuild the Gators into a national power.
