The University of Florida has welcomed former coach and Heisman Trophy winner Steve Spurrier back with open arms.

Spurrier, who retired as South Carolina’s coach last October, returned to his alma matter as a program ambassador and consultant and will be honored during the Gators’ season opener with the unveiling of Steve Spurrier-Florida Field.

But that’s not all. Florida also released a 33-page digital guide welcoming the “Head Ball Coach” back to the program Thursday, which you can find here.

Spurrier played quarterback at Florida from 1963-66 and won the 1966 Heisman Trophy while leading the Gators to a national championship as a coach in 1996. He was also two-time All-American during the 1965 and 1966 seasons respectively.

Spurrier rejoined the Gators as a quarterbacks coach in 1978 following 10 seasons playing in the NFL. Following stints as head coach of the Tampa Bay Bandits of the defunct USFL (1983-85) and Duke, he returned to his alma matter in 1990.

Aside from capturing the 1996 national title, The Head Ball Coach led the Gators to six SEC championships (1991, 1993-96, 2000) and seven SEC Eastern Division titles (1992-96, 1999-2000). He is the winningest coach in Florida history with a 122-27-1 (87-12 SEC) record.

Spurrier spent two seasons as the Washington Redskins’ head coach in 2002-03 before returning to the SEC as South Carolina’s coach in 2005. He spent 11 seasons in Columbia — where he is also the winningest coach in program history — and guided the Gamecocks to their first SEC East division title in 2010.
