Florida will rotate its quarterbacks on a regular schedule against Mississippi State, according to a report.

That news was shared by the ESPN broadcast crew on Saturday. Per the report, Graham Mertz will still see most of the playing time, but DJ Lagway will get every third series. He’s expected to be on the field for UF’s 3rd, 6th and 9th series of the game.

It’s an interesting choice for Florida coach Billy Napier, who also rotated Mertz and Lagway last weekend against Texas A&M. Mertz played better in that game, but Lagway is still widely viewed as the quarterback of the future in Gainesville.

According to Napier, the reason for the regular QB rotation is so that Mertz and Lagway aren’t “looking over their shoulders” after every series. In theory, this plan allows them to play more freely with the opportunities they’re being given.

It’s still an unconventional decision for Napier, who is certainly on the hot seat as he makes his way through Year 3. This weekend may be Florida’s best chance to pick up an SEC win this season. Mississippi State is coming off of a blowout loss to Toledo.
