Rumors are swirling in Gainesville, where Florida coach Jim McElwain is expected to be fired on Sunday morning.

Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but Saturday reports stated that the two sides were working on a buyout and that the university was looking into whether it could fire McElwain with cause.

However, something isn’t quite adding up for former Auburn coach Gene Chizik. Now an analyst, Chizik said on the SEC Network on Saturday night that something seems fishy to him.

“From an outsider looking in, this is very fishy. It’s like the downfall of Rome or any other church, family or business. I see very little communication, more than likely honest communication. It sounds like to me that there’s pressure to get rid of him, but they just don’t want to come out and do it for financial reasons, potentially — I’m not saying that’s what’s going on. This guy has won the SEC East twice and been to two SEC Championships.

“The normal protocol is to call the guy in and communicate with him and say, ‘Hey look, where is this going? Give me your vision.’ Then, you know what, you may have to make changes.

“There’s something way more than this: it’s communication, it’s honesty. This just doesn’t smell good to me.”

Chizik added that the two sides need to come together in order to get on the same page so they can move forward accordingly.

“What conversations are going on without his knowledge? If those are happening, that’s wrong, too. So, the bottom line is this: man up! If you’re the AD, the president or the head coach, man up! Have man-to-man, face-to-face discussions about where it’s going. If you don’t like what you hear, make a change. I just hear a lot of things that don’t sound right or smell right to me.”

What happens to McElwain in the future remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure — it’s a strange time to be a Florida fan or player.
